for the cakes
2 eggs
½ cup butter
2 cups self raising flour
¾ cup sugar
½ cup milk
½ cup sliced glacé cherries
vanilla essence
for the icing
225 grams sifted icing sugar
juice of ½ lemon
hot water
pink colouring

Beat butter and sugar until creamy, add vanilla and then the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Sift flour and combine with cherries. Add to the mixture alternately with the milk. Fill greased patty tins to two thirds and bake in a moderate oven for 20 minutes. When cold, cover tops with icing and decorate with a glace cherry or a walnut.
Icing: Add strained lemon juice to icing sugar a little at a time, blend, and then add sufficient hot water to make mixture of thick coating consistency. Add colouring.
